Is it me, but it seems like we hear more about teachers molesting kids.
We do hear a lot more about teachers molesting kids than teachers opening up the minds of students...but here are facts.
1. Its a teacher's job to give the opportunity for students to open their minds to new ideas.
2. It is illegal to have sexual relations with a minor.
Sometimes hearing all the negative things about American education can be misrepresentative of the full picture. However, without analyzing the negative trends (which you have some knowledge about first) its almost impossible to figure out reform.
One thing that I have to wonder...why is it always Florida? Is there something in the water down there?
Oppressive working conditions, authoritarian administrators and low salaries lead to an assembly line/factory worker mentality among teachers. Treat teachers with respect and pay them a salary commensurate with their education and number of projects (i.e. students) they manage, then you will attract a better caliber of teacher.
Are you suggesting that the current teaching conditions for teachers is so bad that it drives them to immoral acts of sex against really, really young minors? I know the treatment of teachers isn't ideal, but can't they just pick up a drinking habit or something? No one is "getting back at the man" by F-ing 4 year olds.
No, I'm suggesting the treatment of teachers is such that it discourages true professionals with high standards and instead attracts people whose other options are appearing on Jerry Springer. (Please note the hyperbole is for effect.)
