7 people arrested for cheering at graduation

Story: 7 people arrested for cheering at S.C. high-school graduations

There's no better time for a school to flex it's muscle than right after handing a student his/her diploma. It's the one last time they get to rub it in the face of everyone that they suckered into following their rules for 12+ years. This time: No cheering at graduation. It's perfect! It really makes us feel special for dedicating so much time to an institution that has no problems seeing us get arrested for showing a little deserved emotion. Maybe those 30% or more students who never even graduate are on to something!

What? My school would have had to arrest over 1000 kids? This is ridiculous.

There had to have been more than 7 people in the whole audience that cheered. I find it shocking that security was increased simply for the 'threat' of cheering.

We used to throw bouncy balls everywhere once the ceremony was over. I wonder if those would be considered weapons now?

There has to be more to the story.

arresting people for cheering may be overboard (I don't know I wasn't there)but the last few graduations I've been to people are blowing bull horns and screaming and carrying on in such away that you can't even hear the names being read over the P.A. system. And I'm talking about the P.A. system in a basketball stadium that is meant to broadcast over thousands of screaming ball fans. Arresting them may be overboard but I wish some people were asked to leave so I could actually hear the name of my family member being read. People just need to have common courtesy thats all.

I was there, it was my grandson high school graduation. I was amazed to see it happening. There was a law enforcement person in front of each section watching the audience and a law enforcement officer at the top of each aisle to swiftly remove anyone. It took more attention away from the graduation than any folks cheering for their children would have. It was sure short sighted thinking on the adminstration part.

that's a shame. thanks for the insight joe.

This is still America, right! For a moment I thought I might have been reading something from a Communist country

Wow,

No matter how many times I read this it never gets old! Where are our priorities? I think this is one of those cases where the school system takes a stand on something and follow it to the letter, in spite of using common sense and understanding. I would have been extremely upset if I were there to celebrate with my family!

Every single person in the audience should have cheered with each name called out. Who the H___ do they think they are, (administrators & police)?

If I read this right, there was a greater wrong than the arrests (which is a pretty wild statement). Some students, who were cheered (not cheering) had to do community service before they could get their diplomas? They are being punished, but THEY did nothing wrong?

Another example of zero-tolerance = zero-thinking.
